What Types of Offenses are Considered Sex Crimes?

There are many types of crimes that a person can commit in Georgia. These crimes can range from citations to misdemeanors to felonies.

Sex crimes are serious crimes that are often felonies. Sex crimes in Georgia are not minor at all, especially if minors are involved. These crimes are treated with severe legal repercussions, including hefty fines and extensive prison time.

The laws in Georgia cover a wide range of offenses. They are outlined in more detail below.

Sex Crimes in Georgia

There are many sex crimes outlined here. When you think of sex crimes, rape is probably the first one that comes to mind. It is defined as carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will or a female under 10 years of age. So, regardless of consent, a child under the age of 10 cannot give consent to sex under Georgia law. Carnal knowledge refers to any penetration of the female sex organ by the male sex organ.

A person convicted of rape can be punished in several ways. In severe cases, they can be sentenced to death. Otherwise, they can face imprisonment for life, with or without parole, or they can be given a split sentence, which means at least 25 years in prison, followed by probation for life.

There is also statutory rape, which refers to engaging in sexual intercourse with anyone under the age of 16 years. A person can face up to 20 years in prison for this charge.

Sexual battery is also a common crime. Sexual battery occurs when a person intentionally makes physical contact with the intimate parts of the body of another person without their consent. There is also aggravated sexual battery, which occurs when a person uses a foreign object to make sexual contact with another person without their consent. Sexual battery may be a misdemeanor, while aggravated sexual battery can mean life in prison.

Another offense is improper sexual contact. This crime is committed by an employee, agent, or foster parent. The victim may be a student, a patient at a hospital, or in custody of a correctional facility. The punishment for this crime is up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

Another sex crime to know about is sodomy. This refers to any sexual act involving the sex organs of one person and the mouth or anus of another. It is aggravated sodomy when the victim is under 10 years old. For sodomy, the penalty is up to 20 years in prison. Aggravated sodomy can result in life in prison.
